Hi, i am utterly confused about how to move my hands in freestyle. My former coach used to tell me to pull my hand back towards the belly button and turn my hips slightly before it leaves the water. i am with a new swim school now and my present coach says its more efficient to just pull back along the side of my body. i am 11 years old and my time for the 50m and 100m free used to be in the high 30s and about 1.08 respectively. Now i cant even do below 32 secs for the 50m. Please help and thank you in advance! |

From what you have written, I get the impression your old coach was teaching you a s-pull where your hand seems to move in an s shape under your body. A lot of underwater videos have shown that fast swimmers don't move their hand or elbow that much in the water to make the s. Instead, they catch the water, plant their hand, and move their bondy over it which ends up looking like an s, but isn't really. So, I agree with your new coach that it is faster and more efficient to plant your hand next to your body in that regard. The big thing you have to remember though, is to rotate your body. If you are not completely on your side with your fingertips pointed toward the bottom of the pool, planting your hand like this won't do much because you're shoulders are moving like a horizontal double-wide mack truk rather than in a more streamlined vertical position. Check out some Total Immersion freestyle videos online and you'll see what I mean. |
