I've been swimming for almost eight years now. I'm a competitor at the state level and I have many friends across the state. This summer I even went to Hawai'i to swim at zones where I did fairly well. My question is this, Why am I having difficulty keeping myself motivated for this next year. I set out goals for myself, I go to 5 a.m. workouts even when I know that I'm going to be the only one there, I've always loved swimming and I always will, but I'm having a little trouble now. Help me if you can, thanks for your time. |

I don’t think that anyone here can help you keep swimming....it is your choice. You sound like very good swimmer and have great potential, so why give up on something that you love and are good at doing? That’s the question you have to answer, and only you can answer it. For me, I try to do better every week so eventually make it far. Find something that will motivate you and keep your focus on that. As a fellow swimmer, I believe in you man. |

Make sure you're still having fun. I know these words are taboo in swimming but if things don't get better "Take a break!!!!" or just ease up on practice a bit. If you're not enjoying yourself things will just get worse. Trust me I had the same thing happen. I started to get panic attacks which still happen but still. I'm just getting back and I'm practicing hard but not crazy. |

Swimming is something I do to feel better.. I always do an emotional check-in after I swim... (how do I feel when walking out of the pool), and I carry that with me in times that I'm not so motivated. |

By the sounds of it, it sounds like you have already made your choice so I'm going to reproduce a little inspirational speech that my coach gave us when we were all doing quite bad on a set of 9 X300's. Since you went to zones in hawaii i'm going to guess that you are a pretty fast swimmer with quite a bit of potential... So the minute you walk into those 5 am practices... The minute you try hard on sets... the minute you decided to try to get better at swimming... Your choice was already made! Look back to when swimming was fun and awesome and try to get there again! Look in your heart for the love of swimming and it will be there because it has obviously taken you this far! Hope this helps! |
